English Language Development Program
Welcome to the home page of the English Language Development program (ELD) at Fairfax High School. Fairfax is the home to students from all over Los Angeles as well as from many different countries around the world. Walking down the halls or in the courtyard at lunch, one can hear many different languages in addition to English: Spanish, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Thai, Arabic and Tagalog, among others.
The purpose of the ELD program is to strengthen students' skills in all domains of English: speaking, reading, writing, and listening in academic English. Proficiency in English (and exiting from the program) are based on three criteria:
- score of 4 on the ELPAC
- approaching grade level on i Ready
- grade of C or better in ELA or ELD course
ELPAC: English Language Proficiency Assessments for California. This test is given each spring to measure progress in learning English. Once a student gets an overall score of 4, a student is eligible to reclassify, or exit the program.
I Ready exam: This is a basic skills, reading comprehension test. The test is given three times per year. A student needs to score one level below their actually grade in order to reclassify. For example, if a student is in 10th grade they need to be reading at a 9th grade level.
Grade of C: this is the grade at the end of the most recent semester in a student's English Language Arts or ELD class.
