Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project Student Conference
For more than 25 years, the Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project (APYLP) has hosted a no-cost leadership conference for California high school juniors and seniors where students have met with Asian Pacific Islander elected officials, community leaders, and organizers. The 2023 APYLP conference will be held both virtually and in person. The three virtual conference days are March 30th, March 31st, and April 2nd, while the in-person conference day will be Saturday, April 1stin Sacramento. All high school juniors and seniors who attend high schools in California—especially those from our state’s diverse Asian and Pacific Islander communities—are invited to join more than 1,000 alumni leaders in the Golden State. Who Should Apply: The conference Is only open to students that reside in and attend a High School in California. Any California junior or senior year high school student may apply, APYLP strongly encourages applications from Asian and Pacific Islander youth who have some leadership experience and especially from students who show leadership potential, but whose participation in programs such as APYLP may have been hindered in the past by economic, geographic, language, or other factors.

Scholarships valued at $10,000 each
State scholarships are awarded to eligible students in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. The program specifically assists high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives. The scholarships are funded by Horatio Alger Members who, like the Scholars, have experienced challenges but ultimately overcame them to become successful business and civic leaders.

To be eligible to apply for a Horatio Alger State Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria*:
Be enrolled full time as a high school junior in the United States
Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited non-profit public or private institution in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution)
Demonstrate critical financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required)
Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities
Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
Maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0; and
Be a United States citizen
The undergraduate application is available annually from December 1 to March 15.

This is a friendly reminder that we are requesting your student nominations for our Discover Swarthmore (DS) fly-in program, an all-expenses-paid visit to one of the best liberal arts and engineering colleges in the country. Prospective students get a taste of the college experience by meeting current students and professors, eating in our dining hall, and spending a few nights in our residence halls with student hosts. All current high school juniors (graduating in Spring/Summer 2023) are eligible for Discover Swarthmore. During our review, the selection committee prioritizes applications from students who are:

Underrepresented students (Black, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latinx, Middle Eastern and North African, Native Hawaiian, and Native and Indigenous American)
First generation in their family to attend college
Low-income students (Pell-eligible, free/reduced lunch, etc.), and students who might not otherwise be able to afford a trip to campus
Please nominate students who might be a good match for this opportunity by submitting our online nomination form. You may nominate as many students as you wish, using one nomination form per student. We accept nominations from high school counselors, mentors, community-based organization advisors, teachers, and any person who works with a high-achieving student, so please share this information with your colleagues. Our deadline for you to nominate students is Wednesday, June 15, 2022.
Next Steps
After you submit a nomination, we will notify your student of their nomination and ask them to complete the program application by Thursday, July 7, 2022. At the end of junior year and after the student submits the Discover Swarthmore application, we will ask the student to upload a final transcript to the application portal, which is due Thursday, July 14, 2022.

We are looking for high school juniors who have shown outstanding academic ability despite financial challenges. We take a holistic approach to reviewing applications, and we do not have absolute criteria or cut-offs for GPA, standardized test scores, income, or other factors.

Eligibility
- Any high school junior, regardless of citizenship, currently attending high school in the U.S. is eligible for the College Prep Scholars Program. Additionally, U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents living abroad are eligible for the program. International students living outside the U.S. are not eligible.
- Applicants must be high school juniors who are planning to apply to college during the fall of their senior year.
Academic Achievement
- We seek students who have demonstrated high academic achievement. The following is based on profiles of past College Prep Scholars, and are not strict cut-offs:
Academic Criteria
- Grades and rigor of high school curriculum Primarily A's in the most challenging courses available (usually including Honors, AP, and/or IB level courses).
- Class rank Top 5-10% of graduating class.
- Standardized test scores (if taken) Please note: Test scores are not required to apply, and around half of QuestBridge applicants in the past year have not had test scores. The numbers below are general criteria based on successful applicants who reported test scores. 77% of last year's College Prep Scholars scored above 1270 on the SAT or 26 on the ACT (if reported).
- We also recommend submitting any PreACT, PSAT, ACT Aspire, or AP Exams, if available.
Additional criteria Evidence of strong writing ability, intellectual spark, and determination.
Financial Qualifications
College Prep Scholars typically come from households earning less than $65,000 annually for a typical family of four and have minimal assets. This is not a strict cut-off and we encourage students who feel they have faced significant financial hardship to review these financial criteria carefully to see if they may qualify.

- Salaries, wages, and tips
- Business and farm income
- Rental income
- Interest and dividend income
- Retirement distributions
- Alimony
- Child support received
Assets All assets held by the family are taken into consideration, including: - Home ownership
- Business or farm ownership
- Cash and savings
- Investments
- Additional properties
Non-custodial parent income and assets Students with divorced or separated parents must report the income and assets of their non-custodial parent, as this information is taken into consideration by our college partners when determining financial need. The only exception is when the student has not had contact with the non-custodial parent for an extended period of time.
Household circumstances Individual household circumstances are taken into consideration, including:
- The number of people supported by the household income
- The number of students in college (undergraduate only)
- Unemployment or other changes to the household income
- Eligibility for free or reduced-price school meals
- Having been in foster care
- Other non-discretionary financial commitments, such as high medical bills

- Parents' level of education Many past College Prep Scholars are among the first generation in their family to attend a four-year college in the U.S.
- Activities, including home or family responsibilities Participation in extracurricular, community, or other activities.

- Honors, awards, and achievements Accomplishments and leadership roles in extracurricular or other activities.
- Personal traits Strength in character and motivation to succeed.

Samuels Family Latino & African American High School Internship Program (LA-HIP)

Goal: To inspire change and self-determination by igniting a passion for scientific discovery
Program Details:
- LA-HIP is a yearlong paid internship for rising seniors in the greater Los Angeles.
- Participants complete a 7 Week biomedical summer research training and internship with a faculty member at The Saban Research Institute of Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
- Students participate in SAT preparation courses, academic enrichment workshops, as well as a yearlong college counseling program.
- Students receive a stipend, Metro Card, and Meals from the Hospital Cafeteria.
Eligibility:
- Identify as an underrepresented group in medicine and science: Black, African American, Hispanic, Latino/a/x, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander.

Opportunity for Juniors: Award for Community Engagement
YALE BASSETT AWARD for Community Engagement
Sponsored by the Yale Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration
Are you interested in receiving an award that may increase your chances of being accepted to a university? Are you interested in demonstrating your leadership skills in community engagement? Yale Center for the Study of Race Indigeneity and Transnational Migration (RITM) is presenting the Bassett Award for Community Engagement for high school juniors. The deadline to apply is February 1, 2022.
Recipients of the Yale Bassett Award for Community Engagement will demonstrate a record of creative leadership and public service, academic distinction, interdisciplinary problem solving, and experience addressing societal issues that might include, but need not be limited to, race and racism. Students with non-traditional leadership experiences or significant work experiences are also encouraged to apply.
To be considered for the Yale Bassett Award, interested students in the Class of 2023 should submit an application that will include an account of their relevant experiences and aspirations, academic record, extracurricular commitments and leadership positions. Students will also be asked to identify a teacher, mentor, coach, religious leader, community-based non-profit leader, or community member who can provide them a letter of recommendation.

Boston University will be test optional for first-year applicants applying for fall 2023 and spring 2024.
Here are some important facts for you to know:
This policy applies to all undergraduate schools and colleges at Boston University and all scholarship programs. Applicants will have the option to indicate whether they would like us to consider their standardized test scores when they apply. For the fall 2021 enrolled class, only 42% of students submitted standardized test scores.
International students will still be required to submit the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo test as the primary means for evaluating English-language proficiency.
